The Redbud Design Challenge: Same Floor Plan, Two Very Different Dreams

February 6, 2026
What happens when you give a group of Simmons Homes employees the same floor plan, the same budget, and total creative freedom?

You get The Redbud Design Challenge...and two homes that could not be more different.

To introduce the newest addition to our plan book, the Redbud, we decided to do things a little differently. Instead of starting in the design studio, we started with our people.

Employees from across the company -accounting, customer service, purchasing, sales, design, closings, and more- were split into two teams and challenged to design their ideal version of the Redbud. Both teams began with the same exterior elevation and were held to the same budget. From there, the rules were simple: dream big and have fun.

And they did.

From Floor Plan to Finish Selections

The challenge kicked off with layout decisions. Teams reworked kitchens, reimagined primary bathrooms, added windows, fireplaces, built-in features, and architectural details...finding creative ways to elevate the Redbud while keeping it functional, comfortable, and attainable.

Once layouts were finalized, the real fun began. Each team selected every finish going into their home:

  • Tile
  • Paint
  • Cabinetry
  • Lighting
  • Hardware
  • Flooring

Every decision mattered. Every dollar counted. And every team member brought their own perspective to the table.

What surprised us most? Just how wildly different the results turned out.

Meet the Teams

Design Divas

The Design Divas leaned into a coastal cottage vibe filled with charm, light, and personality. Their Redbud features an added front elevation window that instantly boosts curb appeal and brings more natural light into the home.

Inside, you’ll find soft green hues, warm wood tones, and gold accents woven throughout. The kitchen showcases a beautiful sea glass green variation tile backsplash, a custom island, built-in cabinetry with floating shelves, and three sunny windows over a ceramic apron sink. Vertical paneling adds texture in the entry, laundry, kitchen built-ins, and bathroom shelving areas, while a pop of green on the front door ties it all together.

Fresh, inviting, and full of character. This Redbud feels like a breath of coastal air.

Color Collective

The Color Collective took the Redbud in a completely different direction, focusing on clean luxury and elevated architectural moments.

Their standout move? Reconfiguring the layout to include a dual vanity in the primary bathroom - a highly sought-after feature and a serious power play. A tray ceiling with wood beams flows from the kitchen through the dining area, while a striking angled, handcrafted modern fireplace anchors the living room. Windows flanking the fireplace bring in natural light and enhance the open feel.

The kitchen is sleek and refined with white quartz countertops, a warm white vent hood, a wood-stained island, fluted glass pendant lighting, and gold hardware throughout. A stained wood front door completes the look, giving the home a polished, upscale presence.

Same Redbud. Same Budget. Totally Different Results.

That’s the magic of the Redbud Design Challenge.

Both homes are currently under construction, with paint and finishes coming next—and this is where the vision really starts to come to life. While we originally planned to keep everything under wraps until the big reveal… the secret didn’t last long.

Both Redbud Design Challenge homes are now available for purchase as Quick Move-In Homes.

But don’t worry—we’re still saving the best part.

Community Spotlight: Henson Square

Both Redbud Design Challenge homes are located in Henson Square, a gated community in Bixby designed for connection, comfort, and everyday enjoyment.

Situated directly across from Bixby West Elementary, Henson Square offers an ideal location for families, while still feeling tucked away from the hustle and bustle. The neighborhood features thoughtful amenities including a pickleball court, dog park, and covered pavilion, creating spaces where neighbors can gather, play, and unwind.

While conveniently close to Memorial Drive for easy access to shopping, dining, and daily errands, Henson Square is set back just enough to remain quiet and peaceful—offering the best of both accessibility and tranquility.

It’s the kind of place where great design meets a great sense of community—making it the perfect setting for these two one-of-a-kind Redbuds.

You Get to Vote

This spring, we’ll be inviting homebuyers, Realtors, and our community to help decide which Redbud takes the win. Public voting is coming soon, along with a grand reveal event where you’ll be able to tour both homes in person and see every design choice up close.

At Simmons Homes, we believe great homes are built through collaboration and this challenge is proof that when creativity meets teamwork, something special happens.

Two teams. One floor plan. Which Redbud will be your favorite?
