Spring Landscaping Tips for Your New Home

April 9, 2025
As spring blooms in Oklahoma, it’s the perfect time to start thinking beyond the walls of your new home and turn your attention to the yard. While most of your focus during the building process is naturally on floor plans, finishes, and features, your landscape design plays a big role in both curb appeal and daily enjoyment. Your brand new Simmons Home will come fully sodded in most cases with shrubs lining the front. But just think about what all you can add to give it your personal touch!

Whether you're just breaking ground or recently moved in, here are a few expert tips to help you bring your outdoor space to life this season.

Start With the Soil

Your builder is working with dirt—but your future lawn needs soil. Good soil is the foundation for a healthy landscape. Before planting, consider bringing in topsoil enriched with compost to support lush grass, thriving plants, and vibrant garden beds.

Design With Purpose

Think of your landscape like you would an interior room—it should be both beautiful and functional. Plan for a variety of foliage and flowers for full space that is visually textured Sketch out areas for gardens (flower beds, a veggie patch, or native plants), outdoor seating, and any features you dream of like a fire pit or pergola. By visualizing the zones of your yard early, you’ll create a cohesive outdoor space that complements your home’s layout.

Create Outdoor Living Zones

Your yard isn’t just a patch of grass—it’s an extension of your home. Create areas for entertaining, relaxing, and playing. Add a sitting nook under a shady tree, carve out space for lawn games, or design a cozy corner for a hammock. Just like your open-concept interior, outdoor spaces benefit from flow and intentionality.

Don’t Forget the Hardscaping

Hardscaping—like pathways, fences, patios, and retaining walls—gives structure to your landscape and increases functionality. Incorporating these elements early helps your yard feel complete and ready to enjoy.

Follow the Sun (and Shade)

Take note of how the sun moves across your yard throughout the day. Some areas will be ideal for sun-loving plants, while others are better suited for shade gardens. If your lot includes mature trees, use them to your advantage when planning seating areas or selecting plants.

Go Pet-Friendly

If you’ve got pets, do a little research before you plant. Some common landscaping plants—like lilies, hydrangeas, and azaleas—can be harmful to cats and dogs. Check out the ASPCA’s list of toxic and non-toxic plants to make your yard both beautiful and safe.

Think Short- and Long-Term

Not everything needs to happen at once. Start with the essentials—like sod, mulch, and a few key plantings. Then, create a seasonal plan to build on your landscape little by little. Over time, you’ll enjoy watching your yard evolve and mature, making it uniquely yours.

Spring Forward

Spring is a season of fresh starts—and there’s no better time to begin shaping your outdoor space. With a bit of planning and creativity, your yard can grow into a personal retreat that’s as welcoming and well-designed as the home it surrounds.
